SERVICES

The Purple Door, formerly Women’s Shelter of South Texas, is a non-profit organization committed to serving individuals affected by domestic violence and/or sexual assault, regardless of when the violence occurred. The Purple Door offers support and empowerment to women, children, and men through a variety of services, programs, and referrals with the goal to assist survivors in regaining their independence.

The Purple Door employs a team of counselors who hold a master’s degree in counseling that provide counseling, wellness and support, and empowerment to women, children, and men who are or have experienced domestic violence and/or sexual violence. The Purple Door’s counseling services are available to those who reside in our safe shelter and for those who do not:

• Counseling (individual/group)
• Counseling for secondary victims of domestic and/or sexual violence
• Safety planning
• Dynamics of family and sexual violence
• Dynamics of those who use battering behavior
• Cycle of violence and building healthy relationships
• Play therapy (children ages 6 and older)
• Counseling offered in a safe, public location within our 12-county service area.

Turning Points
This psychoeducational group provides curriculum that defines the different types of abuse, social norms that support intimate partner violence, affects caused from trauma, what the state allows in regard to self-defense, and finally discusses how humans respond, resist, cope, and survive abuse.

Parenting
This multi-week curriculum provides clients with knowledge and techniques survivors can implement while promoting healthy practices in raising their children in a safe environment.

Domestic Violence 101
Domestic Violence 101 (DV 101) is a course to empower women in learning the dynamics of domestic violence, how to identify red flags within an intimate relationship, and learn healthy relationship skills.

The Purple Door provides legal advocacy for individuals experiencing domestic violence and/or sexual violence – there is no attorney on staff. An Advocate will schedule a one-on-one meeting to provide an individualized legal needs assessment and criminal justice plan for:

• Legal Aid Referrals
• Crime Victims Compensation Application
• Protective Orders or Restraining Orders
• Emergency Protective Orders
• Non-Trespassing Orders
• Divorce and/or Child Custody
• Title IX
• Court accompaniment
• Or other legal advocacy needs.

The Purple Door’s Advocates provide individualized case plans to those experiencing domestic violence and/or sexual violence. Advocates are available to meet clients for a one-on-one assessment of needs based on a survivor’s specific situation:

• Crisis intervention and advocacy
• Peer counseling
• Safety planning
• Wellness and empowerment

Information and referrals to community resources, such as:

  • Medical Care
  • Housing
  • Obtaining legal records (birth certificate, driver’s license, identification)
  • Boarding pets
  • Utility waivers
  • Child-care
  • Food, clothing, or other items needed.

Support and Wellness Groups

Sexual Assault Support Group: Open to all survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones.

Support Group: This process group provides an open forum where clients are encouraged to stay in the “here and now” while addressing current challenges caused by a history of trauma and abuse.

Family and Friends Support Group: Open to all those wanting to know how to encourage someone they care about and gain tools to help support, make a referral for agency services, or learn more about how to talk to someone about domestic and sexual violence.

Schedule: first Friday of every month starting October 4, 2024, from 12pm-1pm and the third Tuesday of every month starting September 17, 2024, from 5:30pm-6:30pm

The Purple Door provides safe, emergency shelter to women, children, and men who are experiencing domestic violence and/or sexual violence. Individuals who seek safe, emergency shelter are admitted on a case-by-case basis when meeting with a Victim or Residential Advocate. The Purple Door does not turn any survivors away and there is no time limit for a client’s length of stay, with regard they maintain compliance with the agency’s shared living guidelines.

About the shelter:

The Purple Door’s shelter consists of 15 community bedrooms that have the capacity to house:
All survivors, including families with children

The Purple Door is equipped with a kitchen and provides the following meals to our residential clients:
• Breakfast
• Lunch
• Dinner
• Snacks

Note: We are able to accommodate specific dietary needs upon request.

All children residing in shelter have access to specific youth services to help them feel more comfortable in the shelter environment. The donation room is also available to clients in order to provide clothing, toiletries, shoes, diapers, and other needed items.

The Purple Door is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Corpus Christi, Texas. Our agency provides FREE services to victims and survivors of family violence and sexual assault throughout a 12-county region of South Texas. We offer support and empowerment to individuals through a safe shelter, non-residential services/programs, and outreach.

All services are confidential and available free of charge to victims and survivors staying at the shelter and those residing elsewhere in the communities we service.
